Rethinking the PR pitch for capitalism – a PR & comms breakfast

30 January 2020

UK capital markets

The breakfast follows on from our report last month on 'The Crisis of Capitalism' which pulled together in one place why so many people are so angry with capitalism, bankers, big business and the elite, and what we can do about it.

Few sectors of the economy have been blamed more for fuelling popular anger with capitalism as banking and finance - and few sectors have as much to lose from the backlash against it.

In light of the huge majority won by Boris Johnson and the Conservatives last month it may be tempting to think that capitalism can return to business as usual. We think instead that it will become even more important to ‘sell’ capitalism in the right way.

Some of the key issues for discussion will be:

  • What are the main causes of the poor reputation of capitalism, banking and finance?

  • What has been the main ‘pitch’ in the past and how successful has that been?

  • What would be the key elements of a new pitch?

  • And how can the industry ensure that any new pitch is more than just spin?
