The future of capital markets in Norway

14 May 2026

New Financial’s head of research and Director, EU, Maximilian Bierbaum, joined policymakers and industry leaders in Oslo to present the findings of our recent report on 'The future of capital markets in Norway'

The future of capital markets in Norway

The report benchmarks the size and depth of banking, finance, and capital markets in Norway against its Nordic neighbours and sets out a range of recommendations to strengthen Norway’s capital markets ecosystem.

The discussion highlighted both the opportunities and challenges facing Norway’s capital markets:

• Norway’s capital markets remain significantly smaller than the Nordic average relative to GDP;

• Venture capital investment has declined sharply over the past decade, making Norway an outlier in Europe;

• Strong areas of opportunity include the growth of household savings and the strength of Norway’s high yield market;

• There is significant untapped potential to channel more capital into growth companies, innovation, and long-term investment.

A key theme throughout the evening was the importance of encouraging more individual savers in Norway to invest more of their money, alongside creating a more supportive environment for capital formation and investment.

New Financial would like to thank Ung i Finans and Finansforbundet (Norge) for hosting the event, and to all the speakers and participants for an engaging discussion on the future competitiveness of Norway’s financial ecosystem.
