New Financial took part in an event at the European Parliament in Brussels

Unlocking EU banking competitiveness

William Wright, New Financial’s founder and managing director chaired a panel discussion on ‘Smarter financial regulation and supervision for a sovereign Europe’ with panellists including Almorò Rubin de Cervin, head of unit, banking regulation and supervision, DG FISMA; Irene Tinagli MEP, S&D member of the ECON Committee, European Parliament; Karlheinz Walch, director general of financial supervision, Deutsche Bundesbank and José Antonio Álvarez, non-executive vice chairman, Banco Santander.

This timely conversation brought together policymakers, regulators and industry leaders to explore one of the biggest questions facing European financial services: how to balance financial stability with growth and competitiveness. The panel will explored key themes in the debate including:

• Why the competitiveness of the EU banking sector matters now

• The trade-offs between risk reduction, regulation and growth

• The impact of fragmentation, complexity and supervision on EU banks

• What a more integrated and efficient framework could look like

• Lessons from other markets and how the EU can respond
